Martin
Orford has become known for being one of the most respected keyboard
players in the British progressive rock scene over the last twenty
years. Best known for his role as a founding member of IQ, he has just
released his first solo album entitled "Classical Music and Popular
Songs".
Following a rather classically orientated musical education, and stints
in a series of obscure college bands, Martin joined up with guitarist
Mike Holmes in The Lens in 1978, and after three years of gigging with a
predominantly instrumental line-up, they formed IQ together in 1981.
IQ's career has since continued to go from strength to strength, and
with eleven albums, two concert videos, and a world-wide devoted fan
base, they remain one of Progressive rock's most enduring and popular
acts.
In addition to IQ, Martin has also been a regular performer with Jadis
since 1991, and he appeared on and produced their acclaimed debut CD
"More Than Meets The Eye", as well as playing on the follow-up
"Across The Water" and their Millennium release
"Understand".
Since 1995 Martin has been working regularly with legendary King
Crimson, Asia and UK bassist/vocalist John Wetton. He appears on John's
"Arkangel" album (together with such luminaries as Robert
Fripp, Steve Hackett and Simon Phillips) as well as the live releases
"Nomansland - Live In Poland", and "Live in New
York". He will be assisting John with the recording and production
of his new CD "Sinister" later this year.
Martin Orford's debut solo album is something of a departure from the
standard that he has become known for, taking influences from both
classical music and British folk, as well as the expected rock and pop
references. Despite the differences in style, Martin has enlisted the
services of his colleagues from IQ, Jadis and the John Wetton band
(including John himself) on the album, helping to give the diverse range
of material a quality and a sound which will delight progressive rock
fans and more mainstream listeners alike
