Spock's Beard was formed in 1992 in Los Angeles by brothers Neal and Alan Morse, and with the addition of drummer Nick d'Virgilio, the band began gigging in their local area soon afterwards. Their polished and innovative brand of progressive rock initially brought little reaction from the major record companies, so the band decided to fund and record their first CD release "The Light", on which they were joined by bass player Dave Meros.

"The Light" proved to be a truly ground-breaking album, combining the extended epic songs of the progressive genre with a genuine pop sensibility, and rave reviews quickly brought the band to the attention of the Syn-phonic label in the USA and progressive specialists GEP in Europe, with whom licensing deals were arranged. "The Light" was finally released in Europe during October 1996, and the band, who had recently added keyboard player Ryo Okumoto to the line-up, ended a most successful year by releasing (on their own Radiant Records label) the "Official Live Bootleg" consisting of recordings from the show at Progfest '95 in Los Angeles.

1997 saw the release of the brilliant "Beware Of Darkness" album, which received even more critical acclaim than its predecessor. The profile of the band was further raised when drummer Nick d'Virgilio (who had already worked with Tears For Fears) was recruited by Genesis for their "Calling All Stations" album. Nick has since worked with Peter Gabriel also, but fans of Spock's Beard need not fear as he has returned to the fold for the brand new CD "The Kindness Of Strangers", released in January 1998. This CD promises to be the band's most successful yet, and indeed has already been voted Album Of The Month by Germany's influential Rock Hard Magazine.
